~The Secret Place ~ (Its not a secret anymore)

You have probably heard the term “secret place” used in Christian conversation and may have even heard teaching on the subject. The term “secret place” comes from Psalm 91 and is a wonderful Psalm that holds promises of protection, salvation and deliverance. Lets take a look at the text:

Psalm 91:1-3 ~ He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” 3Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler  and from the perilous pestilence.

When believers are standing in faith for protection and deliverance this is the “go-to” scripture that seems to come to mind, But to understand what the “secret place” is, you must first realize two things:

1st ~ This Psalm is a prophecy about our position in Christ Jesus.

2nd ~ The “secret place” is not a secret anymore.

As beautiful as this Psalm is, it is only a shadow of what we now possess in Christ Jesus. To dwell in the secret place is no big mystery, it is simply to live and walk in Him, in Christ, to be ever submitted to His will, His agenda, His work, and His direction. This is what the bible refers to as “entering into His rest”, and that rest IS THE SECRET PLACE.

Hebrews 4:1 ~ [ The Promise of Rest ]   Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.

Hebrews 4:10  ~ For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

When you take up the Lords yoke and burden, the responsibility of protection and deliverance rests solely on Him. That doesn’t mean He won’t lead you into difficult situations that test your faith, your strength, your courage, and try your patients, but it  does mean that He will walk through it with you and hold you up and keep you the entire way.

If you want to do an interesting study, look up all the phrases in the New Testament that refer to “in Him, in Christ, and in Whom.” This will help you understand the secret place, it will help you realize that it is not a secret anymore, but most importantly it will help you understand who YOU are. You really don’t know who you are as a Christian until you know who you are IN HIM.

Now read Psalm 91 in the light of this understanding and see what wonderful promises that you possess IN CHRIST JESUS.

Psalm 91 ~ He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”

3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. 4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. 5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, 6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. 8 Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, 10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; 11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. 12 In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. 13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. 15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.”

I think the key to Psalm 91, and in fact, to every promise in Scripture, is that one must first and foremost be in a right relationship with God through Christ. Too many churches today preach an “easy-believeism” message of peace and prosperity without emphasizing the absolute necessity of Christian discipleship and surrender to God’s will. We like the idea of God’s love and grace but chafe at the idea of self-surrender and the daily taking up of the cross of discipleship.
Thanks for your post, it was a blessing!

    • Sean,
Thanks for your comments. You are right about discipleship, it is an absolute necessity. I think if Christianity gets easy … you probably ain’t doin it right. I believe that peace and prosperity is ours, but I am not confused about how that comes either. We must labor to remain in Him, in His rest, and submitted His agenda. Prosperity begins to look different to you when you walk that out.
      Thanks again,
      Bless you.

  2. It is my understanding that upon this earth there is a rest a believer may enter into with God. It is when the believer is saturated in obedience to the Holy Spirit. The difficulty is the Holy Spirit is jealous of our relationship or distractions and requires our ultimate attention, if we desire to begin manifesting that rest. I believe it is important to note that the rest that I talking about is a rest that is sustained through obedience. Not everyone desires entering God’s rest and not everyone believes such rest is possible and not everyone wants to pay the price of suffering to get it. Its a mixed blessing. Your sleep is so sweet at night and you simple feel for lack of a better word, clean.

    • Roger you hit the nail on the head.
Obedience IS the key. The “labor” or “diligence” that Hebrews talks about to enter into that rest is the labor or struggle to remain obedient to His leading. Even in God’s rest you will still need a comforter. To cease from your own works and enter that rest (secret place) and let Christ work through you is the highest form of Christian living, and God’s original intent.
      God bless you.
      Jack
