Why was Jesus called “the Word”?

John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

What is a word? Why was Jesus called “The Word?” Why are words so powerful? Why, according to Proverbs 18:21, is death and life in the power of the tongue?

“A word is a verbal or written expression that carries ideas and creates IMAGES. The very nature of the word shapes the image that it produces.”

If I say; “Black Labrador Retriever with a red collar,” I just put a specific image in your head. You took what I said, you processed it through your memory and experience, and it produced a specific thought/picture in your mind. It produced an image!

We must have a preconceived image already present in our thinking for images to form. Unfortunately, we have so much memory and experience of our fallen, carnal nature that these images tend to dominate our thought life and make up our minds in advance that this is who we really are. Jesus didn’t die for us to remain the same and someday go to heaven, He died so that we could be transformed into His IMAGE, so that God’s original purpose for mankind could be restored in you.

………………..

The written Word helps us create, and maintain the image of God in us.

James 1:23-25   For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

If we read the Bible, keep it before our eyes and in our thoughts, we will have a good idea of what the image of God is because Jesus was the express image of God.

The whole reason He was able to redeem man from sin was that He was the Image of God.

Hebrews 1:3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

We see in this verse that Jesus was not only the express image of God, but He upheld all things by His word. This means that, among other things, the image of the Father was upheld in Him by the power of His words.

God’s image IN YOU is upheld by exposure to the written word, and the power of His word SPOKEN BY YOU!

Make an effort to know what God says and begin to say what He says about you.

Words, The Steering Wheel Of Your Life

Part of the mission God has given to me is to teach and encourage people to speak God’s Word and create an awareness of the power of our words. This is a huge part of living by faith.

Saying what God says about you and putting yourself in agreement with Him by confessing what He says in His Word will set you on a course to fulfill your divine destiny on this earth and reach your potential in Christ.

I am fully convinced by the Word of God that we can change our lives by what we say. The Word of God is full of instruction and examples of the use of words and their importance in our lives. The book of Proverbs is an instruction in wisdom and it is filled with passages about the power and effect of our words. We will refer to some of them later, but first take a look at what James says about the power of the tongue and its ability to direct the course of our lives.

James 3:3-5 ~ Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!

We have some great comparisons here that show us the power of our words. The small bit in the horse’s mouth can turn and direct that powerful animal and change its course. And just like a tiny rudder on a huge ship can point it in any
direction, what we say with our mouth is like the steering wheel of our life, it directs and determines our direction and course.

It has been my observation that most Christians DO NOT believe this principle. If they did, they would be more selective in what they are saying.

Lets look at some more scripture that describe the awesome power of the tongue.

Proverbs 18:20 ~ A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit
of his mouth;
from the produce of his lips he shall be filled.

Proverbs 18:21 ~ Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and
those who love it will eat its fruit.

Is it really true that life and death are in the power of the tongue, the power to speak life or death to your situation? Your body, your job, your career, your family, your finances, your ministry, your mind, they are ALL affected by what is coming out of your mouth.

If you look at today’s most popular motivational speakers, you will see that they have some understanding of these principles and have had great success applying them to their lives and the lives of their followers. Most of them don’t even know that there are eternal spiritual laws at work, and yet they know that they can change their world with the things that they say. And that is exactly the point.

You don’t have to know why things happen as long as you know that they DO happen. There is more than enough scripture that plainly spells out the power that you have in your words without you having to do an exegetical theological study on the topic.

God has made it very plain and simple. This is a topic that should be above argument and easy for all to see because of the sheer volume of scripture on the subject. Yet when you mention confession of God’s Word people come out of the woodwork to take a position against it.

This makes perfect sense to me because I know that the enemy HATES it when you speak God’s Word. Jesus spoke it when He defeated Satan in the wilderness and you can speak it to defeat Satan in your own life.

When the devil comes to steal kill and destroy, you can use God’s word to build up, give life, and prosper.

Here are a few more scriptures to help drive the importance of your words:

Job 22:28 ~ You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; So light will shine on your ways.

Proverbs 10:11 ~ The mouth of the righteous is a well of life, But
violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

Proverbs 15:4 ~ A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But
perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Mark 11:23 ~ For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this
mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.

Isaiah 57:19 ~ I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,” Says the LORD, “And I will heal him.”

Psalm 103:20 ~ Bless the LORD, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word.

Joshua 1:8 ~ This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

These are just a few passages that tell us the power that is available to us. This is a huge responsibility. These verses would not be in the bible unless God wanted us to be aware of this power and use it for good.

Take heed to what is coming out of your mouth. If it does not build up and bless, strengthen and encourage, produce faith and create a vision for success … DON’T SAY IT!  Remember, when you speak … it should be an improvement on silence.

~Building A Stronghold Of Faith~

~ Mark 11:23 ~ For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

Just because you’ve tried faith confessions for a few weeks and didn’t see any results, doesn’t mean that nothing is taking place.

You released creative power the first time you spoke the word, the creative power that builds faith in the human spirit, the power  to establish a mighty stronghold of faith in your own heart.

Before you see any manifestations in the physical realm, you must first get the word established in your heart. The heart is the first place that you will notice results from confessing truth. Furthermore, things are always won in the spirit before they are seen in the natural. Gods Words are SPIRIT and LIFE. When you speak His Word into any situation you are speaking to the spirit realm and giving life to the situation you are speaking to and giving life to the faith in your heart.

If you make a decision to confess God’s word consistently, and not just “try it” for a few days or a few weeks, you will see God’s power begin to remove the mountains in your life. To establish truth in your life, you have to keep after it, no matter what you see, and no matter what your situation looks like.

Consistent confession produces the  stronghold of faith required to move your mountains.
