The Significance of SAYING

Are you a good communicator? Careful, tactful and wise with your words? Or are you one of the many people that need to carry around a roll of Duct Tape to keep you from sinning with your mouth and saying things you regret?

Oh, I am not pointing fingers at anyone, I have been known to need some of that miracle-working, silver sticky stuff myself.

If you truly are a servant of Christ, you immediately feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit when you say something that hurts people or tears them down. If you go for long periods of time and don’t experience those little pricks of conviction and correction in your heart, I would suggest to you that you are not even trying.

We all have room to grow in this department; I don’t care how mature we are. One of the most important things we can learned is to trust our heart. Our heart (spirit man) has a direct line to God’s heart and mind, and the source of all wisdom and knowledge. If we take a moment to check up on the inside before we speak, we would see an immediate change in the quality of our communication, as well as the quality of our relationships. This is a principle that Proverbs makes very clear.

Proverbs 15:28 ~ The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.

In others words, give your heart a little time to tell your mouth what to say. 🙂

Our words carry enormous weight, and can carry severe consequences. More than we sometimes think. They have the ability to impact people for a very long time, shaping and molding who they are and influencing the direction and path that they take. The bible says that faith comes by hearing, (Romans 10:17) So we should ask ourselves; “what are my words making people believe about themselves, and how are my words shaping my own beliefs?

Words can build courage and strength or they can discourage and weaken. They can minister grace and life, or pain and death. They can build and edify, or they can tear down and destroy. They not only communicate, they also create.

Luke 6:45 – A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

What treasure have you been storing away in your heart? Did you even know that you had a store? Whether you know it or not, your heart is being filled with something. The things that you give attention to, look at, and hear fills your heart, and whatever you are full of comes out when you speak. A minister once told me, ” When you get squeezed with problems, what’s inside you WILL come out.” It is so true. So, when a Christian gets squeezed Christ should come out.

God’s Word is the obvious choice if we are to store treasure in our heart. His Words are spirit and life, they are health and medicine, they are full of grace and they are truth. When you are full of God’s Word your communications carry a part of HIM with it. Your speech becomes a tool that God can use to build you up and impart grace to others.

Ephesians 4:29 ~ Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

The best definition of grace is:

“The divine influence on the heart, and its reflection in the life.”

There are few things more rewarding than to know that you have been used by God to influence another person for HIM. To impart His grace and leave that person better off than before you spoke to them. Man! It just doesn’t get any better!

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). Every day, we are shaping reality for ourselves, and others who hear our words. The choice is ours. How will our words impact others? How will your words impact YOU and your family? Are you determined to make progress in this area? Do you see the need?

I have a little saying that I try to live by. As my wife will attest, I don’t always do it, but I’m still growing, PRAISE GOD! The saying is this:

“Before you speak, make sure it is an improvement on silence.”

Just doing that one little thing will keep you from all kinds of grief.

The Word of God is full of commands to keep His word before our eyes and in our mouth. It’s clear that words must be treated as a stewardship. I will leave you with two of my favorite scriptures on the importance of stewarding words. Be blessed!

Joshua 1:8 ~ This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Proverbs 4:20-22 – My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; 22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.

Words, The Steering Wheel Of Your Life

Part of the mission God has given to me is to teach and encourage people to speak God’s Word and create an awareness of the power of our words. This is a huge part of living by faith.

Saying what God says about you and putting yourself in agreement with Him by confessing what He says in His Word will set you on a course to fulfill your divine destiny on this earth and reach your potential in Christ.

I am fully convinced by the Word of God that we can change our lives by what we say. The Word of God is full of instruction and examples of the use of words and their importance in our lives. The book of Proverbs is an instruction in wisdom and it is filled with passages about the power and effect of our words. We will refer to some of them later, but first take a look at what James says about the power of the tongue and its ability to direct the course of our lives.

James 3:3-5 ~ Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!

We have some great comparisons here that show us the power of our words. The small bit in the horse’s mouth can turn and direct that powerful animal and change its course. And just like a tiny rudder on a huge ship can point it in any
direction, what we say with our mouth is like the steering wheel of our life, it directs and determines our direction and course.

It has been my observation that most Christians DO NOT believe this principle. If they did, they would be more selective in what they are saying.

Lets look at some more scripture that describe the awesome power of the tongue.

Proverbs 18:20 ~ A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit
of his mouth;
from the produce of his lips he shall be filled.

Proverbs 18:21 ~ Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and
those who love it will eat its fruit.

Is it really true that life and death are in the power of the tongue, the power to speak life or death to your situation? Your body, your job, your career, your family, your finances, your ministry, your mind, they are ALL affected by what is coming out of your mouth.

If you look at today’s most popular motivational speakers, you will see that they have some understanding of these principles and have had great success applying them to their lives and the lives of their followers. Most of them don’t even know that there are eternal spiritual laws at work, and yet they know that they can change their world with the things that they say. And that is exactly the point.

You don’t have to know why things happen as long as you know that they DO happen. There is more than enough scripture that plainly spells out the power that you have in your words without you having to do an exegetical theological study on the topic.

God has made it very plain and simple. This is a topic that should be above argument and easy for all to see because of the sheer volume of scripture on the subject. Yet when you mention confession of God’s Word people come out of the woodwork to take a position against it.

This makes perfect sense to me because I know that the enemy HATES it when you speak God’s Word. Jesus spoke it when He defeated Satan in the wilderness and you can speak it to defeat Satan in your own life.

When the devil comes to steal kill and destroy, you can use God’s word to build up, give life, and prosper.

Here are a few more scriptures to help drive the importance of your words:

Job 22:28 ~ You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; So light will shine on your ways.

Proverbs 10:11 ~ The mouth of the righteous is a well of life, But
violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

Proverbs 15:4 ~ A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But
perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Mark 11:23 ~ For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this
mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.

Isaiah 57:19 ~ I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,” Says the LORD, “And I will heal him.”

Psalm 103:20 ~ Bless the LORD, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word.

Joshua 1:8 ~ This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

These are just a few passages that tell us the power that is available to us. This is a huge responsibility. These verses would not be in the bible unless God wanted us to be aware of this power and use it for good.

Take heed to what is coming out of your mouth. If it does not build up and bless, strengthen and encourage, produce faith and create a vision for success … DON’T SAY IT!  Remember, when you speak … it should be an improvement on silence.

~ What Is Your Testimony? ~

Revelation 12:11 ~ And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

How do we overcome? Part of the way we overcome is by our testimony. This is not just limited to the story of how you came to a relationship with Jesus Christ, in fact it is more about what you are TESTIFYING on a DAILY BASIS.

Do you testify about your illness and how you never have enough, or are you “calling those things that be not as though they were.” (Like God does … like Abraham did, Romans 4:17 ) and declaring the promises of God in the face of your adversity?

Search this site and find the biblical confessions that address your concerns. They are all organized and printable for your convenience. Begin speaking the promises of God every day and TESTIFY of what God is saying about you.

Things are WON in the spirit realm before you see them in the natural realm. Use the Sword of the Spirit and FIGHT for what is rightfully yours! WIN IT IN THE SPIRIT, THEN EXPECT IT IN THE NATURAL!
